Don’t wait for the “perfect” job ad to appear. If you value their mission, culture, or the work they do, send a speculative CV and get on their radar.
Here’s how to do it well:
1. Research first
Find out:
- Who to contact (a hiring manager, team lead, or HR)
- What the company values
- Where your skills would add real value
2. Write a short, tailored message and attach a strong tailored CV
Keep it genuine and focused. Try something like – “I’ve followed your work at [name of company] for some time and I’d love to explore future opportunities to contribute in [Y area]. I’ve attached my CV and would welcome a conversation should an opportunity present itself”. Even if there’s no vacancy now, your CV should clearly show – What you do best and how you align with their work or values and the impact that you could make.
4. Follow up (gently)
If you don’t hear back after a weeks, a polite follow-up message shows interest not desperation.
Companies value people who take initiative. Sending a speculative CV isn’t pushy – it’s proactive. And if you’re the right fit, they might create an opportunity just for you.
